Also, if you go for a futuristic look, why settle for a half ass design effort, like the Glass?

Kinja'd!!!

The Recon Jet looks like it means business and does. It is rugged, lightweight and has polarized lenses. It can connect to your WiFi enabled phone. It runs Android 4.2, it has a dual-core processor, an HD camera and costs only $600.

Talking to a cell phone on the street made you look like that, in the 80's.

People will get over it, it's called progress.

Yes, but is this form of connectivity any necessary?

Actually, I'm now curious: will the cognitive draw necessitated by Google Glass make you more susceptible to danger in every day situations?

I want a recon jet. It's basically a sports HUD with a camera.

...like Google Glass, which has a more viable platform than any of its "competitors"?

Kinja'd!!!

Anyways, here's a design patent granted to Google recently.

Judgement call. It does move, though.

History doesn't need to repeat itself, as each event is unique and influenced by series of unique circumstances that take place before, during and after the event. The introduction of those devices doesn't need to by like the introduction of cell phones in each of its technicalities. Even if Google's Glass will be the winning idea, because of the platform, that won't stop other companies to make better looking devices to rival it. I can't wait to see what Sony and Samsung have in their labs, to smash Google's Glass(pun intended).

Kinja'd!!!

Sony's prototype certainly looks better.

Sadly, Sony has inescapable profit loss and Samsung has buying-rights-to-Oculus-tech for their eyeware strategy. They both seem to be more interested in VR devices than AR devices.

Incidentally, I think Recon Jet looks just as ridiculous. Just like Google Glasses, but with different frames and different projector location.

The problem with Sony's profits is that they see themselves as Japan's prime technology manufacturer, and because of that they will invest in, and produce a wide portfolio of technology, and will always look to expand that, spending even more R&D money. I think that with cars getting more tech. with each new model, Sony's big chance could come from a big Japanese car maker, like Toyota or Honda, as such an investor would ensure them the freedom to create amazing gadgets in the future.

I talked to a guy wearing Glass once. It was fucking weird, even though I'd like to see it (and other wearable tech) progress.

And no, I didn't bring up the fact that he was wearing it.

That will depend on how it's used and on the level of distributive attention, each individual has.

No it does not. That picture you posted conveniently hides the width of the device, which is hilariously wide.

With Google and Apple both advancing the in-car platform (with Google producing the software that Sony devices run on), I don't think Sony will be able to make any headway into car tech.

Kinja'd!!!

It's already bad enough that Toyota actually partnered with Sony's rival Asus for in-car tech instead of its compatriot.

Kinja'd!!!

I do feel bad for Sony, but they're just not good at promoting and selling their products (hence making them not matter at all in terms of advancing technology). Remember their $2,500 11in OLED TV? No one does, because no one bought one or talked about it. What about two generations of smartwatches? Even an indie company like Pebble has more name recognition than Sony in that regard. What about their cellphones? Despite having waterproofing better than anyone, despite building camera module that numerous big company buys for their own phones, no one actually buys Sony phones, leading to a massive $2+ billion loss last year.

Sony's problem isn't spending a lot of money on R&D. Their problem is making all that R&D actually matter in terms of public image or making stuff that people want right now .

A cell phone was still cool even if you did look like a tool. Google glass makes you look like both a tool and a massive goon.
